The Kreel found us in 2069.

 

Humans had established Foothold Colony on Mars and were working on a faster-than-light method of space travel that the Kreel had already proven impossible.  They offered to share their span drive technology and things moved a lot faster after that.

The year is 2177.  Willik and his half human brother Zeffery live on the deep space freighter Mern Bay, captained by their father.  When Will’s best friend Kai is found dead, they immerse themselves in the alter reality gaming world that claimed his life. From splat guns to gravity dumps,  molecular knives to organic weapons, Will and Zeff take on one of the biggest corporations in the galaxy to keep more kids from dying.

8Freight

A common expression for a type of space freighter design with 8 interchangeable pods docked on a central core that connects two permanent hubs

 

Adapt

Adapted English, the standardized language of Earth that is spoken in space.

Amber

A Kreel alcoholic beverage.

​

Gin Atomic

A cocktail containing the Earth alcohol gin.

 

AVB

Auxiliary Vehicle Bay.

Bio tag

A coded implant tag that allows the user to avoid sensor detection (PRI-PRO protocol)

 

Bug, the

Will and Zeff’s personal spacecraft, hangered in AVB 60 on Mern Bay, interstellar capability with Will's tangent drive.

 

Chum

A hallucinogenic edible jelly available in assorted shapes and flavours.

 

Divit Bird

A small brown bird with blue feet, native to Planet Avian.m

The huge Earth conglomerate that owns Mern Bay.

A 3D holographic puzzle game in which the player picks two subjects on which the puzzle is based.

First Fly

The celebration of a juvenile Taarch leaving the oceans of Emmerau to swim as an adult in space

 

Hoverchair

A wheelchair that hovers over solid and liquid surfaces.

 

Implant

An electronic interface, normally implanted under the skin just below one ear

 

Jam

An addictive drug sold as a purple gel which is spread inside the nose. Jam addicts can be identified by reddish blotches visible under their facilal skin.

 

Life Braid

Kreel allow a small section of their hair to grow from birth without cutting. Worn in a braid, the length is a method of  approximately determining age. Cutting off a braid is devastating and can be life threatening.

A navigation system which allows space vessels to travel through (or span) singularities instantaneously, Kreel technology. A span is made up of tangents.

 

Support field

A medical tool that supports a life form in various positions, supplies warmth, cooling and/or medication as required

A carbonated beverage available in black (common), Silver (hard to get) and Platinum (rare)

 

Tacpad

A tactile touchpad the size of a Human fingerprint

 

Tangent Drive

One of Willik's designs, an alternative to the Kreel span drive, suited for smaller interstellar craft. Tangents are mapped individually which requires far less computing power and a more compact engine.

Originally designed as a test facility for various approaches to colonization, these 3 levels in Mern Bay's C-Hub have become a slum (no security, lift service or scanners).

Open, the

A large park-like recreational area on Mern Bay featuring a programmable weatherfield

 

Pod

A universal container that docks with an 8Freight, modified by various species to carry cargo, colonists, corporate offices, luxury liners, etc.

A planet with two humanoid, sentient species, one winged, one without wings

Also used to refer to the non-winged sentient species

 

Avian Prime

A sentient, winged humanoid from Planet Avian

 

Dallid

A planet, home to a sentient non-humanoid species (the Dallid) who grow technology instead of manufacturing it

 

Emmerau

A planet, home to two sentient species, one of which is humanoid (Emmeraun), the other comprised of energy (Taarch)

 

Emmeraun

The humanoid sentient species native to Planet Emmerau

 

Homeworld

A planet, home to a sentient species of humanoids known as the Kreel. The Kreel developed technology, space travel in particular, very quickly due to the discovery of a second habitable planet within their own solar system (Nextworld)

 

Hroak

A planet, home to a sentient alien non-humanoid species who exist as a single collective mind. The phrase "Even the Hroak would spit on us if they had something to spit with" is commonly spoken.

Also used to refer to the species itself

 

Kreel

The sentient, humanoid species that evolved on Homeworld. The Kreel discovered Earth in 2060.

A moon orbiting Planet Tarotia, home of the Scaley Garbagers

 

Nextworld

A desertlike planet in the same solar system as Homeworld, colonized by the Kreel

 

Sendia

A planet, home to a sentient species of humanoids with catlike tendencies

 

Sendians

The sentient species of humanoids native to Sendia

 

Taarch

A sentient energy being, born in the Emmeraun oceans, that evolve into space swimmers at maturity

Willik "Will" Flane

Will is a 14 year-old computer whiz/hacker who designs his own tech. He's lived on Mern Bay all of his life. Will is Captain of the Mern Bay Junior Dive Team and has a red belt in Tae Kwon Do. Human, male.

 

Zeffery "Zeff" Flane

Will's half-brother Zeff is 17 years old but only considers his Kreel age as relevent. Zeff is a musical performer, stage name Zeffry, who composes his own songs and plays the verteron. He has achieved the fifth plane in the Kreel Sentic and plays for the Quarks hoverball team. Half Kreel, half Human, male.

 

Dr. Nimn Samnang "Sam"

Zeffery's partner, a bio-metric engineer who obtained his degree at age 16. Sam is currently 18 and has his own research lab in Mern Bay's C-Hub. Human, male.

 

Phade     (first appears in Book #3)

Will's best friend, approximately the same age. Phade is blind but her two birds, Iszl and Pec, serve as her eyes via a telepathic bond. Avian female.
