Hi, I'm Helen Woodhouse. I'm a writer. I've been lots of other things ... an administrative assistant, graphic designer, desktop publisher, computer teacher, website creator, fashion consultant and stay at home Mom. Through all of it I've been a writer.
I was born on the Canadian prairies and spent my entire life there until my husband Allan and I chose early retirement and moved to Costa Rica. After nine years exploring our adopted second home we returned to Canada where we live in our favourite city ... Victoria, BC.
"
Books for kids should be a tactile experience."
After years of playing with poetry, fan fiction and
sci fi for adults, a clear if unexpected path revealed itself. I wanted to write for children and it was time to get serious. Since then I have published three picture books, a first chapter book, and three middle grade novels. I’ve also been busy with my “Abeuela Loves James” series which I’m writing for my grandson as he grows. Currently I'm hoping to work with an illustrator in time to publish Lisbet's Best Christmas in time for this year's holiday season.

For all you Facebook friends who have little ones or Grandchildren [Sofie's Solitaires] is a fun read about a little Costa Rican girl who is out to find a pet and the discoveries she makes! This book can be found on Amazon.ca. It is beautifully illustrated and has great lessons.

What a lovely way to introduce children to the notion of freedom versus captivity and an understanding of the responsibilities of owing a pet. The book also offers an intriguing glimpse of Costa Rica, its' scenery and wildlife.

At the back of the book I discover an Information Page where I learn that the songbirds featured in the story are Black Faced Solitaires, native to Costa Rica and Panama. I like the fact that the book is based on something real.
